About Room to Read
Literacy is the Foundation
Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, yet a quality education remains out of reach for millions of children worldwide.
While access to primary school has improved over time, educational quality continues to be a major challenge. Many children attend school but still aren’t learning the basics due to shortages in trained teachers, limited funding, and inadequate school infrastructure.
Room to Read envisions a world where every child can access a quality education that empowers them to thrive and create positive change in their families and communities.
Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, Room to Read transforms the lives of millions of children through education — working toward a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality.
Teacher Shortages
Many classrooms lack trained educators, leaving children without the guidance they need to master foundational literacy skills.
Limited Funding
Underfunded schools struggle to provide basic materials — books, supplies, and infrastructure are often out of reach.
Infrastructure Gaps
Inadequate facilities prevent children, especially girls, from consistently accessing quality educational environments.
Gender Inequality
Girls continue to face systemic barriers to education. Room to Read addresses this directly through dedicated gender equity programs.
The Vision
Education as World Change
Why Detroit Alumni Supports This Work
The Detroit Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on the belief that fraternity and education are inseparable. Since 1920, the chapter has championed access to opportunity for Black men and families across Detroit — and Room to Read extends that legacy globally.
By partnering with Room to Read, the chapter connects its local commitment to community development with a worldwide movement to end illiteracy and advance gender equality in education.
